COMPANY HISTORY

The Perinatal Consulting Group (PCG) organized in 1985 provides unique support to the perinatal community. The array of services include:

  • market analysis
  • program planning
  • product development
  • revenue assessment.
  • Clients include hospitals, insurers, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, state and federal government.
  • PCG has worked with hospitals struggling with the decision whether to expand their perinatal programs and implement a higher level of care. The PCG consultant team provides extensive analysis to determine the demand for these services, the ability of the hospital to respond to an unmet need in an existing market, program costs and revenue requirements to support such a service.

PCG and its adjunct clinical consultants also assess the effectiveness and quality of existing perinatal programs and make recommendations for improving the quality, service delivery, and cost efficiency of perinatal care.

These are just two examples of consultations conducted successfully over the last 10 years. We stand ready to assist you and your organization in: planning perinatal or women's services; performing market research, designing and performing quality assurance and program evaluation.

To accomplish these consultant engagements, PCG calls upon the expertise of staff consultants who have extensive knowledge of health care for women and their infants. PCG also has access to a broad array of panel consultants that include physicians, nurses, administrators, architects and allied health professionals actively involved in the delivery of women's health, reproductive health and perinatal care.

The PCG prides itself on the level of professional expertise, the competence and efficiency of its work, the honesty of its appraisals, and the depth of its studies. The firm's close connection to patient care delivery is a hallmark that sets it apart from other consulting firms.

CONSULTANT TEAM

The core PCG consultant team consists of senior consultants with extensive experience in the planning, implementation and delivery of women's service, reproductive services and perinatal care. All of the senior consultants have work in health care settings, as well as consult with health care organizations. They keep abreast of the field through frequent contact with physicians, hospitals and ambulatory settings involved in delivering care in increasingly difficult circumstances. Moreover these consultants are all proficient in the use of complex data bases to help quantify strategic planning and management issues.

We pride ourselves on giving senior administrators, physicians and board members honest assessments of markets and programs. We also back up our recommendations with solid research. Recognizing the difficulty of transforming data into information, we take extraordinary care in making our presentation understandable to our audience.

Finally, our intent is to build on the information and resources developed by our client. We price our services to include readily available information to reduce cost. Our guiding philosophy is to assist our clients in the process of problem diagnosis and solutions so that subsequent planning, implementation and monitoring can be performed in-house.

PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

  • Maternity Service
  • Newborn Unit
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Reproductive Health Service
  • Women's Health Service
  • PCG consultants will assess service changes from the perspective of their impact on the existing facility, staffing requirements, and financial resources. Since all three components are closely interrelated, we will provide separate analyses for each program component and propose separate recommendations.

FACILITY REQUIREMENTS:

PCG consultants will examine the existing facility and identify whether the volume and type of future patient utilization corresponds to the present space configurations, equipment and service relationships. Any discrepancies will be documented for future capital planning.

STAFF REQUIREMENTS:

PCG will address staff needs in each program component separately to determine staff mix and ratio-to-beds and/or patients using current national research on staffing requirements. We will give important consideration to the supply of staff in the hospital's market area and development of recruitment programs for new service components, i.e., maternal/fetal specialists, neonatologists, gynecologists, clinical nurse specialist, etc.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

PCG will conduct analyses of capital and operational expenses associated with each program component. Using information provided by the hospital on capital expenses and current area salary ranges, we will develop total program costs and costs per day and patient visit. We will compare these cost figures to average cost estimates at comparable regional institutions drawn from the PCG National Data Base.

PLANNING FOR MANAGED CARE

  • Is your hospital's perinatal program ready for stricter managed care contracting?
  • How do you transform your perinatal program into an asset to managed care programs?
  • The Perinatal Consulting Group will help your hospital prepare for the growing pressures on your perinatal program. Ou r years of experience in developing community-based perinatal programs will help your hospital prepare for the focus managed care companies place on perinatal care.

DID YOU KNOW THAT . . .

  • 30-50% of managed care dollars are spent on reproductive health and perinatal care.
  • 25% of pregnancies experience a preterm delivery or an infant with complications.
  • These pregnancies accounted for 40% of all maternal and newborn costs.
  • In response to these issues, managed care organizations are concentrating on shifting greater risk to hospitals and physicians.
  • The Perinatal Consulting Group wants to help you develop a Perinatal Program response that will deal with these pressures.

WE WILL INITIATE A REVIEW OF YOUR PERINATAL ACTIVITY TO IDENTIFY:

  • the incidence of high risk births
  • the cost of care for the high risk mothers and infants
  • the comparison of risk and cost to a national data base

WE WILL THEN ASSESS THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE TO DETERMINE:

  • the extent of perinatal risk in the catchment area you serve
  • the supply of high risk services
  • the future demand for these services

BASED ON THESE STUDIES, WE WILL DEVELOP A PERINATAL PROGRAM STRATEGY THAT WILL:

  • initiate a system to provide early identification of high-risk mothers
  • reduce the cost of care during pregnancy
  • achieve a balance between low-risk and high-risk births
  • reduce the cost of neonatal intensive care (NICU)
  • develop an appropriate financing strategy
