CONTRACTS - PREMIER PERINATAL SAFETY INITIATIVE

American Excess Insurance Exchange, RRG (AEIX) is a hospital owned and controlled excess professional liability company managed by the Premier Insurance Management Services, Inc. (PIMS) a subsidiary of Premier, Inc. In 2008, AEIX began an 18 month Perinatal Initiative (PI) with a subset of 16 of its managed hospitals with the goal of improving patient safety and reducing risk exposure of the perinatal services at the participating hospitals.

The AEIX Perinatal Initiative encompasses a number of components including the identification of structural differences across the hospitals; analysis and initiation of process improvement activities using care bundles, team, simulation, and common language training; surveys of safety culture and patient satisfaction, along with internal and external benchmarking of outcome measures to demonstrate improvements in patient safety.

NPIC/QAS is a data partner with Premier on this project and provides participating hospitals with comparative outcome data for the period prior to the initiation of the PI (baseline period) of CY 06 and 07 and quarterly for the post-training period of 7/1/08-12/31/09. Participating hospitals receive data for their own hospital as well as aggregate comparative data for a group of participating and a group of non-participating hospitals.

We are pleased to announce that this Initiative has been expanded for another year, with NPIC analyzing hospital data through December 31, 2010. NPIC/QAS participates in quarterly conference calls to review the reports. These calls also provide an opportunity for hospital teams to share successful performance improvement strategies and benefit from each other’s experiences.
